Audit Your Google Business Profile Before Chasing AI Search Visibility

By Schkovl

Updated

A Google Business Profile audit should start with a straightforward question: does the profile accurately describe the business a customer can contact today? Compare it with the website and the business's own service records before proposing changes.

This checklist focuses on accuracy and maintenance. It does not establish which profile fields an AI answer uses or promise that a corrected profile will appear in an AI Overview. The evidence documented by Schkovl does not support those claims.

Check Categories Against the Actual Business

Review the selected category with the person responsible for the service. Check that it describes what the business actually does, and review any additional categories for accuracy. Do not add a service simply because it seems like a useful search term.

Keep a dated record of the previous setting and the reason for a change. That makes a later review easier without treating every edit as a proven ranking improvement.

Compare the Description and Services With the Website

Read the profile description, service list and service-area information beside the corresponding website pages. Ask the owner to resolve differences: a discontinued service, old telephone number or outdated hours should not be carried forward just because another listing repeats it.

The wording does not have to match word for word. The underlying facts should agree. Where a public address is appropriate, confirm it with the business; do not manufacture a location to target another area.

Review Photos, Updates and Customer Questions

Look for photos that no longer represent the premises, team or work offered. Replace misleading material with approved, relevant images. Use updates to communicate information customers need, such as changed hours or services, rather than assuming that posting frequency is itself a ranking lever.

Read reviews and questions for information the business may need to clarify. A response can address the customer's concern without inserting promotional keywords. This checklist does not rank detailed reviews above short ones or infer how an AI system weighs either kind.

A Field-by-Field Working Sheet

FieldAudit question
CategoryDoes it accurately describe the current business?
Services and areasCan the owner confirm every listed offering and area?
Business name and contactAre these the actual public business details?
HoursAre regular and special hours current?
Website URLDoes it reach the correct business page and contact path?

Separate Completed Corrections From Search Outcomes

Record what you checked, what changed and who confirmed the facts. If you later examine search visibility, keep those observations separate from the correction log. A changed result does not by itself establish which edit caused it, and a technical correction is not evidence of traffic or revenue growth.

As a working routine, review the profile after a service, contact or hours change and set a periodic check with a named owner. For related website checks, see the local SEO checklist. Schkovl's SEO and AEO service describes the broader diagnostic scope and its evidence limits.

Does this audit guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview?

No. This is an accuracy checklist. It does not establish how a particular AI answer selects businesses or guarantee inclusion.

How often should the profile be checked?

Check after changes to business details and agree on a periodic review with a named owner. The interval is an operating choice, not a claimed ranking factor.

Should the description match the website word for word?

The facts should agree; identical wording is unnecessary. Resolve conflicting services, hours and contact details with the business owner.

Do more detailed reviews necessarily rank better?

No such comparison is established here. Review customer feedback for concerns and useful factual clarifications without assuming a ranking formula.
