The Unified Entity Graph: How Search Engines Connect Your Business Across the Web
Search engines do not evaluate your website in isolation. They encounter your business across your website, Google Business Profile, directory listings, social profiles, structured data, articles, backlinks, reviews, and third-party mentions.
The goal is for those separate references to resolve to the same real-world entity.

The Unified Entity Graph is not the official name of a Google product. It is a practical way to understand a larger shift in search: from matching pages to keywords toward understanding entities and the relationships between them.
What Is a Business Entity in Search?
An entity is a distinct thing a search system can identify.
That thing might be a person, company, product, place, organization, event, or concept.
For a business, the entity is not simply its domain name.
A business can exist across multiple digital surfaces:
- Its official website
- Google Business Profile
- LinkedIn company or founder profiles
- Industry directories
- Local business citations
- News or editorial mentions
- Review platforms
- Social profiles
- Structured data embedded in its website
The search engine's job is to determine whether all of those references describe the same organization.
If your website says one thing, your Business Profile says another, and your directory listings use three different versions of your company name, you have created an identity-resolution problem.
That does not automatically destroy your rankings. It does make your business harder to interpret cleanly.
How Does Google Connect Separate Business References?
There is no single field where you tell Google, "These 40 pages are all us."
Search engines build understanding by connecting repeated facts, URLs, relationships, and references.
Imagine a business called Example Plumbing.
Its website says: Example Plumbing, serving Burlington and Oakville, exampleplumbing.ca, 905-555-0100.
Its Google Business Profile uses the same business name, phone number, website, services, and service area.
Its directory listings repeat the same core information.
Its Organization or LocalBusiness structured data identifies the business and points to its official website and relevant profiles.
Another local website mentions Example Plumbing and links to exampleplumbing.ca.
Those references reinforce one another.
The system is no longer looking at five unrelated web pages. It has multiple pieces of evidence pointing toward one underlying business.
That is the graph.
What Information Forms the Entity Graph?
Not every signal performs the same job. A strong business entity usually has several layers working together.

None of these should be treated as a magic ranking lever. Their real value is that they help create a clearer, more internally consistent representation of the business.
Why Does Entity Consistency Matter?
Businesses often treat individual platforms as separate marketing projects.
Someone updates the website. Someone else creates the Google Business Profile. An old directory listing survives from five years ago. LinkedIn uses a shortened brand name. A previous phone number remains attached to several citations. A new service gets added to the website but nowhere else.
Individually, none of those problems looks catastrophic. Together, they create fragmentation.
Search systems now have to resolve questions that the business should have answered clearly:
- Is this the same company?
- Which website is official?
- Which phone number is current?
- Does the company operate in Toronto, Burlington, or all of Ontario?
- Is the founder connected to this organization?
- Does the business actually offer this service?
The cleaner those relationships are, the less ambiguity exists.
This is why entity optimization is fundamentally different from stuffing the same keyword onto twenty pages. The objective is not repetition for repetition's sake. The objective is consistency of meaning.
Where Does Structured Data Fit Into the Entity Graph?
Structured data gives machines an explicit description of relationships that may otherwise have to be inferred from page copy.
For example, Organization schema can define a company's name, URL, logo, contact information, and other relevant properties. The sameAs property can reference other URLs that unambiguously identify the same entity.

Structured data does not override reality. If your schema says one thing while the visible website and external profiles say something different, adding more JSON-LD does not solve the underlying problem.
The markup should describe the business that actually exists on the page and across the web.

Why Citations Still Matter Even Beyond Traditional Local SEO
A citation is simply an online reference to a business, commonly including information such as its name, website, phone number, or location.
Local SEO discussions often reduce citations to a checklist: "Get listed in 50 directories."
That misses the larger point. The useful part of a citation is not the directory count. It is the external corroboration. A legitimate third-party source is independently describing the same business that your website describes.
The question is therefore not: how many citations can we manufacture? It is: how consistently is the real business represented wherever it appears?
A hundred low-quality listings carrying stale information can create more cleanup work than value. Twenty accurate, relevant references can provide a much cleaner foundation.
Entity work rewards precision more than volume.
What Breaks a Unified Entity Graph?
Most entity problems are not sophisticated technical failures. They are operational inconsistencies that accumulate over time.
Multiple business names. Your website uses the full company name while directories, social profiles, and older pages use several unrelated variations. Brand variations can be legitimate. Random identity drift is different.
Conflicting contact information. Old phone numbers, email addresses, or addresses remain live across external listings after the business changes them.
Duplicate or outdated profiles. Old Business Profiles, directory pages, or social accounts remain indexed beside the current version.
Service inconsistency. Your website describes one set of services while external profiles describe an older business model.
Weak organizational relationships. The company website, founders, brands, products, and social properties exist online but are not clearly connected to one another.
Structured data that contradicts the page. Schema identifies facts or relationships that the visible content does not support.
The common thread is ambiguity. You are forcing a search system to reconcile information that should already agree.
How Do You Build a Strong Unified Entity Graph?
Do not begin by buying backlinks or mass-submitting directory listings. Start with the source of truth.
1. Define the canonical business identity. Document the exact business name, official domain, primary contact information, service areas, services, ownership relationships, and public profiles. One internal record should define what is actually true.
2. Fix the official website. Your website should clearly state who you are, what you do, where you operate, and how the important people, services, and brands relate to the organization. Do not make crawlers reconstruct your business model from vague marketing copy.
3. Align your Google Business Profile. The Business Profile should represent the same real-world business as the website. Categories, services, website URL, business information, and operating model should not tell a contradictory story.
4. Implement accurate structured data. Use the appropriate Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, Person, and related schema where they genuinely apply. Connect entities instead of creating isolated markup blocks with no coherent relationship between them.
5. Clean important external citations. Correct outdated or conflicting information on relevant business directories and industry platforms. Do not confuse citation cleanup with directory spam.
6. Build real third-party recognition. Earn legitimate links, references, reviews, partnerships, coverage, and mentions. Those signals are difficult to manufacture at scale precisely because they represent outside recognition.
7. Keep the graph synchronized. Entity optimization is not a one-time project. When your business changes its services, leadership, domain, phone number, locations, or brand architecture, those changes need to propagate through the system.
Entity SEO Is Really an Information Architecture Problem
Traditional SEO often asks: what keyword should this page rank for?
Entity-focused search asks a different set of questions: What is this business? What does it do? Where does it operate? Which people, services, brands, and websites belong to it? Which external sources support those relationships?
That is a much more structural problem. You cannot solve it with another generic blog post or another batch of directory submissions.
You solve it by designing a digital presence where every major surface describes the same organization.
